Full Moon Party Authority

Koh Phangan, Thailand

The best place to be a Backpacker!

The Full Moon Party is an all night beach party that originated in Haad Rin on the island of Koh Phangan, Thailand. It is held on the night of, before or after every full moon. See Full Moon Party Dates Here.

The first Full Moon Party was improvised at a Paradise Bungalows, Haad Rin on the beach in 1985, for giving thanks to about 30 hippy backpackers. The parties gained fame through word of mouth, and the event now draws a crowd of about 5,000 to 30,000 every Full Moon Party. The party carries on past the sun rise at various after parties. The bars on the sunrise beach of Haad Rin town stay open and play music such as psychedelic trance, R&B, drum and bass, house, dance and reggae. Every backpacker in South East Asia who wants to party comes to Koh Phangan for the Full Moon Party.

The success of the Full Moon Party prompted the creation of Half MoonBlack MoonJungle Party, Pool Party and many other parties and bars.

You don't need a tour to to backpack in Thailand or South East Asia. If you have never travelled before or travelled alone don't worry it is easy. You will meet many amazing new friends. Tourism is very organised in Thailand and South East Asia and everywhere you go people will help you. Most of the time you can book transport direct from your backpackers hostel or from 12go.asia and use Hostelworld.comHostelbookers.com or Agoda.com to book your next hostel.

How much is the Entrance Fee to the Full Moon Party?

If you stay in Haad Rin it is free. Only people not staying in Haad Rin have to pay. At the time of writing it is 100 Thai Baht per person.

Should I stay in Haad Rin for the Full Moon Party?

Yes! Haad Rin is the town of the Full Moon Party. It is where most backpackers stay, so you will meet more people and have more fun. If you meet new friends at your previous hostel or at a party, they will probably be here. The days before the Full Moon Party there are Pool Parties with a free taxi from Haad Rin and a short walk home. There is a Jungle Party the night before the Full Moon Party. If you stay outside Haad Rin you will have to wait until the taxi is full before it leaves. (Usually 10 people) If you want to go to Guy's Bar or Eden Garden you catch a long tail boat from Haad Rin Beach. There is also parties on Haad Rin Beach the nights before Full Moon Party. You also don't have to pay 100 Baht entry to the Full Moon Party!

Should I stay in Koh Samui for the Full Moon Party?

No! Koh Samui is a large developed island full of horrible resorts. Koh Phangan is smaller, less developed, and amazing! Firstly, all the parties the few days before Full Moon Party are in Koh Phangan. You will miss them! Koh Samui is full of resorts, not full of backpackers! Because the few days before the Full Moon Party you will be bored on Koh Samui with nothing to do, as soon as you get dropped at Koh Phangan you will start drinking. Before your return boat leaves at 6am, someone in your group will have started being sick, either you will wait at the pier with hundreds of other sick people or you continue to party. Someone in your group may meet a beautiful boy or girl, they will either have a short romance or you won't see them for a couple days. If Eden Garden is open you may have a tough time getting back in time. And forget the Backyard After Party.

But the worst thing will be your hellish boat ride home! Many people throwing up every wave, the smell making everyone feel sick, some people will be on drugs or drunk, some happy, some sad...

Stay in Haad Rin and have the best time of your life!
